WEP: Wigan’s caring Labour Council and its contempt for the plebs.

B.Prior had written to the Wigan Observer about the policy regarding payment for parking near the Town’s new “Life Centre”. This is a new facility, housing clinic, swimming bath’s etc., intended for the benefit for Councillor’s and Council Officers, but also, allegedly, for the ratepayers, who would be funding it for the next 25 years under a PFI scheme.

The scheme requires those, who wish to park nearby, to pay by credit card, or by payment point in a local shop.

B. Prior had pointed out that not everyone (especially in Wigan) is paid enough to own a credit card.

The response, made by the Traffic Engineer, who would presumably be extremely well paid by Wigan’s caring Labour Council  , was that he/she should walk to a nearby shop and use a pay point, where they charge 20p per transaction.

I doubt that Mr. Hargreave’s was unaware that a 20% loading, for each brief visit, would be significant for someone without sufficient income to warrant a credit card, or the terror that such a person would have of facing a parking ticket, whilst making the 10min. journey to make the payment.

Mr. Hargreave’s would consider such trivialities as a nonsense, as his remit would presumably be to ensure that plebs were kept away at minimal cost.

My email comment would have been, if the site had accepted it:

To be more precise, the printed response from E.Hargreave’s (Wigan’s Traffic Engineer) is truly symptomatic.

The Council is supposed to make policy and the hired help is supposed to implement it.

The response from Mr. Hargreaves (in a similar perfunctory tone to his response to my own complaint about the end of my street being blocked) seems to indicate that he is not only explaining policy but actually making it. 

I thought it was Labour Councillor’s rubber stamping Baron Smith’s policies that was creating the traffic chaos in Wigan but I now believe that Baron Smith is simply agreeing to whatever mad idea that Hargreave’s comes up with.

How about a motorway bypass between Pemberton and Bolton, with another between Warrington and Preston.

Better still close all nearby motorway exits, then Mr Hargreaves will have achieved his objective of making Wigan Town Centre and new Council Citadel, traffic free.
