historical hooligans

One dream of Maggie and her fan, Tony Blair, was the return of Victorian values.

The Victorianisation of Britain seems to be continuing apace.

In Victorian Britain, rioting by criminal elements, noticeable among them was a  family named O’Houligan (hence Hooligans) led to the formation of Sir Robert Peel’s Peelers, who later developed into our modern police force, replacing the Bow Street runners (equivalent to our present PCSO’s).

He proposed setting up the Peelers in 1813 but didn’t get his Metropolitan Police Act until 1829.

It’s worth noting that it was at this time that The Peterloo Massacre occurred (armed militia fired on and murdered unarmed civilians). It was later, in this period, that the events surrounding the early trade unionists unfolded, when The Tolpuddle martyrs were sentenced to transportation for refusing to take a reduction in their wages.
